ANDY WON’T RISK WIMBERS WOE

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

ANDY MURRAY won’t risk rushing back to play singles at Wimbledon “for it to go really badly”. But the Scot admitted playing doubles at his home Grand Slam this summer could be a “possible

stepping stone” in his latest comeback. The double Olympic champion spoke publicly for the first time yesterday since his second hip operation in January.

The upbeat Murray said he is now pain free following successful resurfacing surgery and said: “If it’s possible I’d certainly love to compete again.”

Murray, who hopes to start hitting balls again in four weeks, is now in a race against time to be fit to play again at SW19 in July.

He said: “It’s possible I will play singles at Wimbledon but it is not an aim.

“My goal isn’t to be back playing tennis for Wimbledon. I’d love to. It’s my favourite tournament to play. What happens next, I don’t know. Nobody’s had this operation and gone back to playing high-level singles before.

“If things were going really well but I didn’t just feel I was quite ready, then surely it makes sense for me to wait rather than being, ‘Okay, I need to rush back because it’s Wimbledon’ and waste the last six months of rehab.

“I would hate to go on the court at Wimbledon and for something bad to happen.

“Or to feel really bad and apprehensive and for it to go really badly.”

Murray rated his chances of playing singles at Wimbledon at “less than 50 per cent” but added: “Doubles may be a possible stepping stone to getting back to playing singles.

“Bob Bryan (who had the same operation) was back playing at the Australian Open after five-and-a-half months. Wimbledon comes pretty much five-anda-half months after I had my operation. Maybe I can cut a little bit of time off that.”

Surgery has taken that pain away and I’m really happy about that ANDY MURRAY ON HIS NEW LEASE OF LIFE
