JOYRIDERS stabbed a man to death after he confronted them for crashing into his parked car while he was sleeping in it.
It’s understood the victim was parked in Edinburgh’s Fords Road when his vehicle was hit by a stolen car.
Sources said the man, who has not been formally identified yet, got out of his car and was attacked during a confrontation.
Emergency services were called to the scene, which is overlooked by a council-run care home, by a member of the public but the victim could not be saved and died a short time later.
There has been speculation the victim may have worked at the Fords Road care home but staff at the facility said they were not allowed to talk to the media.
A Peugeot car was abandoned nearby and is being examined by forensic specialists.
Police and forensics officers examined the scene.
Police have reassured locals they will continue to have a high presence in the area over the coming days.
A police source said: “The victim was said to be sleeping in his car when the joyriders hit it. He got out and confronted them and
they stabbed him before making off. The victim is not known to police at all. It’s tragic.”
It’s understood a post mortem examination was carried out yesterday.
Detectives said they are keen to speak to anyone who was in the areas of Fords Road, Stenhouse Avenue, Stevenson Drive and the wider Stenhouse area in the early hours of Thursday.
They said they were particularly keen to speak to anyone who had dashcam footage or saw vehicles being driven erratically.
Detective Inspector Stuart Alexander of Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team said on Thursday: “This death is very much unexplained and we are still in the early stages of our investigation.
“We are eager to establish the full circumstances leading to the discovery of the man’s body and are investigating a number of lines of inquiry, including the potential that a Peugeot vehicle has been involved in this incident.
“I would ask anyone who either lives or was driving in the areas of Fords Road, Stenhouse Avenue and Stevenson Drive, along with surrounding streets, in the early hours of Thursday, and saw any vehicles driving erratically or at speed or any other suspicious behaviour, to get in touch with us at their earliest convenience.
“I would also ask anyone who has any private CCTV or dashcam footage in these areas that can assist with our investigation to come forward immediately and allow our officers to view it.”
Edinburgh City Council said they could not comment on the speculation.
A worker at the care home said: “There are no managers here today and we’re not allowed to speak to the media.”
