Penrice: Jags will show they can cut it against United now

PARTICK TH v DUNDEE UNITED

-

JAMES PENRICE insists Dundee United will face a totally different Partick Thistle from the rudderless club they met on their last visit to Firhill.

Jags lost 2-1 to the Tangerines in Glasgow in Gerry Britton’s final match in caretaker charge after Alan Archibald was axed.

Gary Caldwell was appointed and after a six-game winless start to his reign has slowly turned things around, despite still being anchored at the foot of the table.

Thistle have also been boosted ahead of facing United by earning a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay with Hearts and Penrice is torn between the importance of staying up and helping the club reach their first Scottish Cup Final since 1930.

The 20-year-old said: “The last time United came to Firhill it was the final match before the new manager came in.

“We’re in a totally different place to where we were then. We know how we want to play and there’s a plan on how we can attack teams.

“United will be looking to get three points but we’ve got more than enough to beat them.

“The Cup replay is huge and it’s hard to say whether staying in the Championship or reaching the Final is more important.

“Relegation is so painful but you might never get another chance to go for the Cup.”

But Calum Butcher is certain United can handle the heat in their frantic fight for the title as they try to close the five-point gap on leaders Ross County.

He said: “We’re fighting the right end of the table. The boys can deal with it. I’m excited for the future of the club.”
