Monchi out and sorry after Roma fans clash

-

BY NEIL McLEMAN ARSENAL-BOUND Monchi has quit Roma after clashing with his own fans following the Italian club’s Champions League exit this week.

The Spanish sporting director apologised after telling angry Giallorossi supporters he would “take on each of you one by one” at Porto airport.

Monchi left the club by mutual consent yesterday to clear the way for him to re-unite with Unai Emery and head up Arsenal’s transfer policy on a three-year deal.

The two won three consecutive Europa League titles together at Sevilla before Emery left for Paris St Germain in 2016.

Monchi, 50, spent 17 years at the Spanish club and won 11 trophies. His scouting network and youth development policy brought through players like Sergio Ramos, Antonio Reyes, Julio Baptista, Dani Alves, Ivan Rakitic and Seydou Keita.

“Morelos has bigger fish to fry and the big clubs that are circling probably won’t even know, or care, he hasn’t scored against Celtic. The fact he’s the country’s top striker is all that matters.”

Finally, emailed: “I have a message for the Celtic fans obsessed with talking down Morelos because he hasn’t scored a goal against their team. Don’t fret lads it’s coming your way soon.” CALL THE HOTLINE TOMORROW FROM 11 TILL 12 NOON on: 0141 309 3306 or email us: hotline@dailyrecord.co.uk
