Fears for players after Smalling shoved by fan
THE FA and Premier League will launch an urgent investigation into player safety after Arsenal’s win over Manchester United was marred by a fan shoving Chris Smalling.
A Gunners supporter pushed United defender Smalling after racing on to the Emirates pitch.
The fan has been arrested and faces a lifetime ban as an Arsenal spokesman said: “We take a zero-tolerance approach.”
Gunners boss Unai Emery said: “We don’t want that but it’s not in my control.
“Today I am proud of our supporters who helped us but we must do this with respect.”
Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish was earlier punched by a thug in the Birmingham derby and yesterday’s incidents came just two days after Rangers’ James Tavernier was attacked by a fan during their game against Hibs.
Players’ union the PFA said they were “concerned” and added: “Incidents like this demonstrate certain problems have not been eradicated and that players can be particularly vulnerable.”
Granit Xhaka’s swerving effort after just 12 minutes opened the scoring at the Emirates. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a 69th-minute penalty.
Emery conceded his side was fortunate to get the award after United midfielder Fred collided with Alexandre Lacazette and said: “It was soft. Like last week against Tottenham.”
