Last night, McLeish, 54, admitted her shame over the charge.

She said: “I’m normally a very responsible person and my decision to drive that evening, despite having consumed some alcohol, is one which I deeply regret.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are personal and, while they do not excuse my behaviour, I hope people will understand that everyone makes mistakes.

“I accept what I did was wrong and I’m fully prepared to deal with the consequences. I would like to thank the Police Scotland officers at Ayr for the kindness shown to me during the few hours I spent at the station.”

She joined the board of Kilmarnock in May last year after being associated with the club through her husband Alan’s company, QTS Group.

He is one of Scotland’s most successful businessman and set up the rail contractor firm with a £300 loan from his mum before selling it last year for £80million.

Phyllis McLeish is one of just 10 female executives operating in football boardrooms in Scotland. The club described her appointment as a “landmark moment” as she became the first female to take an active role on the board in more than 20 years. She became the fourth director of the Rugby Park club alongside chairman Billy Bowie, John Kiltie and Bill White. At the time, McLeish said: “We have been involved with Killie for many years now and we have huge affection and respect for the club. “I’m always up for a challenge and this will be a new one.”
