Rice: We were Well under par

-

BY MICHAEL BAILLIE HAMILTON boss Brian Rice has urged his side to show a greater mental resilience if they’re to win their fight for Premiership survival.

Accies looked to follow their 2-0 win at Aberdeen with a victory over the weekend against local rivals Motherwell.

But Rice was left frustrated by their Fir Park performance as they crashed 3-0 – with all the goals coming in the first half – and knows his squad must be mentally tougher if they are to come out on top in the battle with Dundee and St Mirren.

He said: “It was the most disappointed I’ve been with them.

“It was the angriest I’ve been for many years, I did well to control my emotions because I was seething. Everything I say comes from the heart and I was seething because we let the fans down so much and I don’t say that lightly.

“I told them before it’s easy to win one-off games but better teams go on three, four, five-game runs.

“We haven’t done that. It was a chance for us to go to build on what we got at Aberdeen. Within 15 minutes that was out the window.

“It’s mentality, it’s not physical. It’s believing you can go and do it. Having the confidence to go and do it. It’s a psychological thing, it’s between the ears.

“They’ve got to show a resilience, the goals on Saturday were avoidable, we knew where the danger would come from, we put bodies in positions to try to stop Motherwell’s threat and never did it.

“You know what’s coming and you need to be ready for it and we weren’t.”
