SPFL & SFA chiefs in 3-hour yob crisis meet

- BY KEITH JACKSON

THE men in charge of Scottish football have held crisis talks at Hampden in a bid to drive hooligans out of the game.

Record Sport can reveal SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell and his SPFL counterpart Neil Doncaster held the emergency summit over three hours yesterday afternoon and agreed to launch a coordinated

crackdown on the troublemakers shaming the national sport.

We understand both men hope to have the terms of a ground-breaking joint initiative fast-tracked and rubber-stamped before the end of the week.

It follows another embarrassing weekend for the game with Rangers captain James Tavernier confronted by a pitch invader in the league clash at Easter Road on Friday.

One week earlier Celtic winger Scott Sinclair narrowly avoided serious injury at the same stadium when a bottle was launched at him during a Scottish Cup quarter-final tie.

Rangers and Aberdeen supporters also clashed on quarter-final weekend at Pittodrie and Partick Thistle manager Gary Caldwell was targeted by coins tossed from the Firhill main stand during his side’s draw with Hearts.

A source said: “The SFA and the SPFL have been in discussions about the current hooligan problem for some time but events of the last week or so brought the matter to a head. The two bodies have decided to tackle this together with a co-ordinated, cohesive strategy.”
