information from the scene and contact next of kin.”

It was not clear if one of the cars may have been crossing the dual carriageway from or towards Drumlithie village.

Mackie said: “It’s too early for us to say, or speculate, as to exactly what has happened.

“The road will remain closed for some time yet, probably overnight.”

A spokesman for Scottish Citylink said: “One of our coaches travelling from Glasgow to Aberdeen was involved in a serious multi-vehicle accident this afternoon on the A90 near Glenbervie Junction.

“Our immediate thoughts are for those involved in the incident. Safety is our absolute priority and we will assist police with their inquiries into the circumstances.

“There were no reported injuries to passengers travelling on the coach and they were provided with alternative transport to take them to Aberdeen bus station.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said they received a call about the collision at 4.29pm and sent five appliances and 25 firefighters to the scene.

Mackie thanked the members of the public who stopped to help and appealed for any witnesses to contact police by calling 101.

Last week, a school bus was involved in an accident not far from yesterday’s crash scene.

Mackie said: “Over the years, there have been a number of casualties on this road.”

However, he added average speed cameras have led to improved safety on the A90 in recent months.
