Muir and Wells are cheer leaders
SCOTLAND’S Special Olympians have a superstar fan club as they make final preparations to compete at the World Games in Abu Dhabi.
Among those who have given backing to the 44 Scots in the GB squad is athletics golden girl Laura Muir, who completed a double double at the recent European Indoor Championships.
Laura, 25, who won the 1500m and 3000m races in Glasgow – two years after winning both at the Euros in Belgrade – said: “To all of you heading to the Special Olympics with the GB team, congratulations on your selection for such a big event.
“Work hard, give it your best and make sure you enjoy yourselves and savour the experience.”
Former Olympic 100m gold medallist Allan Wells said: “As a Scot, it is very special to wear the British vest. To know you are among the best in BY VIVIENNE AITKEN Britain and compete for your country is a privilege. These athletes have worked hard to get to this level irrespective of what walls have been put in their way. I wish the team all the best.”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon added: “These games will provide days of enthralling sport and give Special Olympians an opportunity to shine.
“I hope all the athletes, families and friends enjoy the memories of the games and create friendships with people from around the world.”
Prince Harry told the team: “You should all be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved simply by getting on that plane to Abu Dhabi and representing your country.
“You’ve all been on your own personal journeys and are an inspiration to us all.”
