McInnes would sacrifice runners-up spot for trophy No.2

BY SCOTT BURNS gave the supporters belief after so long without one.

“I’ve probably seen Rooney’s winning penalty about 100 times but I’ve never watched the full game again as it was a tough watch.

“I thought then, as I do now, there are still more trophies for us to win and as good as that was we feel a lot of motivation from five years ago is still there

“We have been up against a really good Brendan Rodgers team that has maybe denied us a couple of times to win another one. I’d rather win a cup than finish second in the league and if I have to sacrifice runners-up spot for a trophy then me and every Aberdeen supporter would say the same.

Aberdeen know the Cup is their best shot at glory as they already trail second-placed Rangers by eight points.

McInnes refuses to give up the chase but knows they need to go on a run, starting with today’s visit of Livingston.

He added: “We know there are points available that can get us to where we want to be and qualify for Europe which is very important for the club.

“We have work to do if we are going to achieve that. Rangers have shown their qualities this season and they are rightly where they are in the table. While it’s difficult to pull that back it’s not impossible.

“We just need to concentrate on getting to the points tally I want us to and if we do then we will be pleased with our season wherever we end up.”

The late home comeback against Livi in December’s 3-2 win saw the Dons put a real run together and Stevie May hopes today will be the start of another charge.

He said: “We did well against Livingston and it was the same at their place. We’ve shown we can create chances against them.

“They’re hard to beat and it will be a tough game so we need to make sure we’re on top of our game to get the job done.”
