Timothy is given Weah run in USA Under-23s

- BY ALAN MARSHALL

CELTIC starlet Timothy Weah has been dumped into the USA Under-23s after dropping out of their main squad.

The PSG loanee has mostly been used off the bench since his January move and has made only two starts for the Hoops.

Weah, 19, has eight caps and was expected to be included in manager Gregg Berhalter’s squad to face Ecuador on March 21 in Orlando and Chile on March 26 in Houston.

But despite calling up eight players from Europe, Berhalter opted to miss out Weah, who last played for his country in a doubleheader against Peru and Colombia in October.

He will now be used for the Under-23 squad, who have friendlies at the same time, ahead of their Olympic qualifiers.

Berhalter said: “We had to make decisions for this camp and we looked at the players in a number of different buckets.

“For example, we have some younger guys that aren’t getting the game time that they would have expected and they are still age-eligible for the Olympics. So we think it’s a great opportunity for them to play two games with the Under-23s.

“We have other players we’ve evaluated thoroughly in the January camp and we’re going to bring back in the future but not in this camp. That’s another group.

“Then we have some guys returning from injury and we thought now is not the right time to subject them to the intensity of international soccer and the national team.”
