Stevie G’s going to be a top gaffer says Clarke

-

STEVE CLARKE is convinced Steven Gerrard will make a top boss and reckons he’s at the perfect club for his first job.

Gerrard looks set to end his first season in charge of Rangers without a trophy after Aberdeen sent them crashing out of the Scottish Cup in midweek.

Clarke can turn up the heat with a win at Ibrox today as Kilmarnock look to avenge their 5-0 thumping last month.

That Scottish Cup replay was overshadowed by sectarian chants directed towards Clarke and he also hit out at the Aberdeen fans who verbally abused Gerrard on Tuesday night.

Clarke said: “I don’t think there’s any pressure on Steven. He has done a good job in his first season in management so there’s no added advantage for us.

“Steven was a top player and I’m sure he’ll become a top manager. He’s in a great position to do well. The spotlight is on him now.

“When Celtic or Rangers lose a big game, the focus is always on how bad they were rather than how good the opposition might have been. A lot of people overlooked how well Aberdeen played. Rangers will be looking to bounce back in front of their own supporters and we’re looking to build another winning run so it should be a good game.

“I know Steven, he’s intelligent, has a good football brain and he’s also a good person.

“Why Aberdeen fans are chanting sectarian songs at Steven I have no idea. They should have been having a wonderful night enjoying their team winning at Ibrox and supporting their team.”

He said: “The ball is rolling in terms of plans to change certain parts of the team. We know who we want to take us forward. We’ve identified people we would like to join us.

“This is not a reaction to Tuesday. We’ve got an idea and a strategy to go forward. That never stops.

“It won’t be as busy a summer as last year when we made up to 18 signings. We don’t need mass changes but we need more quality and leadership.

“The reality is I don’t have the funds to buy £40-50million players. I’ve got to find the best players who are affordable and who can do a better job than the ones who are here.

“You can’t coach character. You can help people become
