Law will introduce electrician regulation
UNQUALIFIED people who call themselves electricians are being targeted in a proposed change to the law at Holyrood.
More than 100 professions including gas engineers have their titles protected by law but Scotland’s electricians have never been covered.
Tory MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston said he will introduce draft legislation to close the loophole. He said: “For too long, the Scottish Government has dithered around the regulation of electricians.
“It has been discussed and discussed again, without any real commitments.
“When I speak to people about this campaign, the first reaction is usually surprise that anyone can call themselves an electrician without any qualification.
“Most people don’t consult electricians on a regular basis and aren’t always confident about the qualifications of people they employ. This should provide some additional protection to consumers.”
MSPs from across parties indicated support for the plan during a debate last October. The protection of title has been considered by a Scottish Government working group over the past two years but no decisions have been made.
Halcro Johnston has held meetings with trade bodies and the parliamentary officials.
A consultation will have to be held in the first stage of the legal process.
