FM: Indy won’t be chaos like Brexit

Sturgeon to address Parly on vote No2

- BY DAVID CLEGG

NICOLA Sturgeon yesterday insisted there will be “nothing disorderly” about Scottish independence, despite the chaos caused by Brexit.

The First Minister was branded “deluded” by opponents after she pledged a smooth transition to a separate Scottish state.

Sturgeon was speaking days before she is due to update MSPs about her plans for IndyRef2.

She was responding to a Fraser of Allander report that warned a “disorderly” Brexit risks a deep recession in Scotland.

Asked if that would be the same with independence, Sturgeon said: “There will be nothing disorderly about Scottish independence when it happens.”

The First Minister is expected to push for a second independence referendum when the Scottish Parliament returns from the Easter recess on Tuesday.

She first called for a repeat of the 2014 vote in the aftermath of the EU referendum, when 62 per cent of Scottish voters backed Remain.

Sturgeon “reset” her timetable after her party lost 21 seats in the snap general election in June 2017.

She is now under pressure from some in the SNP to hold a vote sooner rather than later.

After addressing delegates at the STUC congress in Dundee yesterday, Sturgeon was asked if the delay to Brexit made it impossible for her to give a timetable for IndyRef2. She replied: “Nothing is impossible.”

Unionist campaigners insisted breaking up the UK would be even more difficult than leaving the EU.

Scotland In Union chief executive Pamela Nash said: “Brexit has proved how difficult it is to leave a political union and leaving the UK would be monumentally more complicated.”
