SCOTT: NOW I’M READY TO UP THE PACE

- BY MARK WOODS

DUNCAN SCOTT warned he still has an extra gear after finishing second best in his opener at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

The Alloa ace, 21, was sunk by James Guy in the 200 metres butterfly final by less than four-tenths of a second.

But the European and Commonwealth champion said: “There is more in the tank. I don’t swim that event that often but when I do I want to make the most of it.”

Scott is out to score at least three solo shots at July’s world championships in Korea by impressing this week and today’s 100m freestyle is top of his bucket list.

He said: “The plan is to see how fast I can go compared to 2018. It will be a good battle. There are some good boys in there.

“It’ll be interesting to see what the heats are like and what happens out of it.”

Adam Peaty toasted a Glasgow double by surging to victory in the 50m breaststroke in 26.49 secs to add to his 100m success.

The Englishman, 24, said: “They’re trying to psych me out. When you shave and taper for a midseason meet you’re trying to psych me out and you still lose… it doesn’t really affect me.

“Even if you get me the world championships are a very different game. Same as the Olympics.”

Scots duo Ross Murdoch and Craig Benson came in second and third and they now have one last shot at getting on the plane to the worlds in tomorrow’s 200m.

Glasgow 2014 hero Murdoch said: “If I can get through the first 100 nice and easy, I’m in there with a shout. And I don’t have Adam to worry about.”

Georgia Davies held off Jessica Fullalove in the 100m backstroke with Kathleen Dawson edging out fellow Scot Cassie Wild for third.
