Welsh suspect is released ‘pending further inquiries’
BY RECORD REPORTER A MAN was arrested by police investigating the murder of former boxer Bradley Welsh.
Police said yesterday the suspect was released later “pending further inquiries”.
A spokesman said: “This investigation is continuing and anyone who has information but has yet to come forward is asked to do so immediately.”
Welsh, 48, was shot dead outside his basement flat in Edinburgh’s affluent New Town area last Wednesday.
The 48-year-old, who starred in T2 Trainspotting, was chatting to a neighbour when the killer walked up and opened fire. Father-of-one Welsh died at the scene.
The murder hunt is being led by the Major Investigation Team.
No details about the man who was arrested, including his age, were released.
Welsh was a former football casual who owned a successful boxing club in the capital.
He turned his life around after spending his teenage years involved with gangs and protection rackets. He also had a spell in prison.
As a reformed character, Welsh devoted a lot of time to charity.
He leaves a partner and eight-year-old daughter.
Welsh appeared in Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men series in 2008.
He played a gangland boss in T2 Trainspotting.
A former British ABA Lightweight boxing champion, Welsh was involved with charity Helping Hands, which fights inequality.
He spent much of his time encouraging youngsters to stay away from crime by becoming involved in sport.
He credited boxing as giving him a “way out” of his “ghetto” past.
Thousands of tributes have been paid to Welsh by friends, family and regulars at his Holyrood Boxing Gym.
Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh said he was “heartbroken” at his friend’s death.
He wrote: “Goodbye my amazing and beautiful friend. Thanks for making me a better person and helping me to see the world in a kinder and wiser way.” Mon-Thurs 8.30am-7pm, Fri till 5pm, Sat 9am-3pm
