GREG GIVING DONS A HIGH AFTER LOWE

-

ABERDEEN boss Derek McInnes reckons Greg Leigh has made such an early impact that he has already replaced Max Lowe as a fans’ favourite.

The left-back arrived from NAC Breda on a season-long loan, with the Dons having the option to sign him permanently.

Leigh, who has already scored twice, has come in as a replacement for Lowe, who returned to parent club Derby County at the end of last term.

And McInnes said: “It was never going to be easy replacing Max. He was a favourite with everyone, myself, his team-mates and the supporters.

“They are different but what Greg has done is become really popular with the Aberdeen fans.

“That is down to his defensive work and goals. He is very good at attacking the ball in both boxes.

“We knew that when we brought him here and that was where we would have one advantage that we never had last season.

“His level of performance has been good as well.”

Leigh was one of only four defenders available to McInnes before the international break, as his injury-hit Dons beat Ross BY SCOTT BURNS County 3-0. Right-back Shay Logan missed the game with a groin problem but is expected to be fit for this weekend’s clash with St Johnstone.

The gaffer confirmed: “I think he will be okay for St Johnstone. We need to get him back running and this week we should be looking to get him on contact work.

“You can see with the subs bench we had no midfielders or defenders there against County. That is not through choice but necessity. We hope Dean Campbell will be okay for St Johnstone as well.”

McInnes is looking to make it back-to-back wins when striker Stevie May returns to Pittodrie with Saints on Saturday.

He is now confident that Aberdeen’s early season blip after their Europa League exit to Rijeka is behind them. The Dons lost at St Mirren, drew at Kilmarnock and needed extra-time to see Dundee off in the Betfred Cup.

But McInnes said: “The players have come through the disappointment of losing in Europe, come through a tough cup tie.

“The league table looks a lot better now.”
