Never mind Kyle’s wonder strike.. stop gifting sloppy goals
BY GRAEME MACPHERSON JIM GOODWIN admits St Mirren cannot afford any more hard-luck stories – nor can they rely on Kyle Magennis’ howitzers.
All four of their league defeats this season have been by a one-goal margin.
As a result the Buddies sit 10th with three points going into a crucial home double-header against Hamilton and Hearts.
Saints boss Goodwin said: “I can’t keep harping on about how good things are at training during the week if we are not picking up points on a Saturday.
“I believe we should have earned a draw in each of our last two away games against Ross County and Livingston. But we haven’t and we have to make sure we start turning these good performances into positive results, starting with Hamilton on Saturday.
“I don’t think we’re far away. I would be a lot more concerned if we were going into these matches and being played off the park each time. It’s not been like that.” A Magennis wonder strike counted for nothing in a 2-1 defeat to Livi before Tony Andreu’s finish failed to stop the same scoreline in Dingwall.
Goodwin, who dubbed three of those four goals shipped “sloppy”, said: “I don’t think I need to do anything too drastic as there’s nobody you could say has been having a nightmare. No individual has been way below par.
“If you take the goals out of the games then I don’t have any major concerns over how we’ve been playing.
“But we need to be more clinical going forward and not relying on Kyle hitting long-distance wonder goals all the time.”
