Killer threw boiling water over jail guard

-

BY DAVID MEIKLE reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk A MURDERER scalded a prison officer in a “napalm” attack after being banned from New Year celebrations behind bars.

Nico Donnelly, 26, was put in segregation at Shotts jail after returning from hospital, where he had treatment for taking an overdose of legal highs.

As a result, he was not allowed to take part in activities with other inmates on Hogmanay.

As he was being served a meal, the thug threw boiling water mixed with sugar at prison officer Derek McKay.

A scuffle broke out, leaving both Donnelly and the officer with broken fingers.

A combination of boiling water and sugar is known in prison circles as napalm. The mixture sticks to the skin and intensifies burns, one of the effects of jelly-like napalm bombs.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court, Donnelly, admitted assault on December 2017.

Depute fiscal Jennifer McLaren said: “Derek McKay sustained scalding to his face but did not require treatment for that. He required treatment for an injury to his finger which came about while restraining the accused.”

Defence solicitor Marisa Borland said of Donnelly: “A number of privileges given to prisoners around December 30 and 31 were removed and he felt victimised by that.”

Donnelly, of Cambuslang, near Glasgow, was sentenced to 18 months, to run alongside his current sentence.

He is serving at least 20 years for stabbing Jamie Johnstone, 21, to death in Glasgow in January 2016.
