Scott celebrates Brewers’ flair in cup shock

EXCLUSIVE

-

SCOTT FRASER helped Burton Albion quite literally put the lights out on Bournemouth.

The former Dundee United star was part of the Brewers side that added to the third-round shocks in the Carabao Cup with their 2-0 win over Eddie Howe’s multi-million EPL stars at the Pirelli Stadium.

Albion’s victory on Wednesday was even more dramatic as the floodlights went out three times and ref John Busby abandoned the game before he was overruled by EFL officials.

Burton were able to see out the win but only after the fourth official had put up his board to reveal 28 minutes of nerveshredding additional time.

A delighted Fraser said: “The floodlights went out three times. When it happened the third time the referee told us that was the game abandoned.

“We were in the changing room and were fuming because we knew some of the Bournemouth coaching staff had been trying to put pressure on the officials to call it off. We were gutted and some of the boys even started to take their boots off. “But fortunately the referee got overruled and he had to BY SCOTT BURNS restart the match. We were lucky because it was a power cut in the area and not just at the ground. “But we were told by the League officials that if the lights had gone out again then the game would have abandoned. “The referee added 28 minutes of stoppage time and it was mad when we saw the board go up and then we heard the added time over the tannoy. The ground just burst out laughing.” Fraser, 24, lasted 94 minutes before he had to watch the remaining 24 minutes from the dugout.

He said: “It was mad but thankfully we were 2-0 up and managed to see it out. It was really enjoyable.

“We had some big wins in last season’s competition (over Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough) and this was another big scalp.

“I had been out injured with an ankle injury and a dead leg but this was my first game back.

“I only trained fully on the Tuesday but the gaffer threw me in and I managed to get through 94 minutes before I had to come off.”

Howe’s Cherries were picked off despite fielding top talent such as Ryan Fraser, Dominic Solanke, Callum Wilson and Harry Wilson.

Scott said: “They rested one or two boys but Bournemouth still had some team out.

“Ryan Fraser started, Solanke, who they bought from Liverpool for big-money, their midfielder Lewis Cook is highly-rated and has already played for England and their full-back Chris Mepham they just bought for £12million from Brentford.

“They had quality all over the park and then when they were looking to get back into the game they brought on the likes of Callum and Harry Wilson.

“The good thing is that we played really well and I don’t think they had a shot that really troubled our keeper.

“Our manager Nigel Clough came in yesterday and said Eddie Howe had been full of praise for us and admitted we had been one of the best teams they had played this season.”

MOTHERWELL TO WIN AT ST JOHNSTONE LIVERPOOL TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

I fancy Liverpool to win at Sheffield United. Obviously – it’s like saying I fancy Jennifer Lopez. But I also have a sneaky suspicion that the Blades will score a goal.
