-

A BLIND man suffered life-threatening injuries when he fell on Glasgow’s Subway tracks yesterday.

The 32-year-old was with his guide dog when he fell on to the line at Bridge Street station shortly before noon.

He was taken to the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment.

British Transport Police said officers were called to the station following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

The force said: “Paramedics also attended and a 32-year-old man has been taken to hospital.

“At this stage his injuries are BY LAURA PATERSON believed to be life-threatening. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

The man’s guide dog was taken into the care of the Scottish SPCA.

The charity said an animal rescue officer had gone to the scene to retrieve the upset dog.

A spokesman said: “An officer attended and collected a guide dog after being alerted by Scottish Fire and Rescue.

“The dog was distressed but appeared to be in good health.”

The animal was handed over to the Guide Dogs charity. A spokesman said: “We will be looking into it to establish what happened but our immediate thoughts and concerns are for the welfare of our guide dog owner and their guide dog.

“Members of Guide Dogs staff have been supporting the guide dog owner’s family in hospital, and the dog is being examined by a vet before being taken into Guide Dogs’ care for the short term.”

Services on both the inner and outer circles of the Subway were immediately suspended. They resumed just before 3pm.
