If you go down to the woods today..

-

In the summer of 1985, three teenage pals rode their bikes into Knocknaree woods on the outskirts of Dublin. Two of them were never seen again.

Fast-forward 21 years to 2006, and the rural community is again rocked to its foundations when the body of a promising young ballerina is found at an archeological site. Did she meet her grizzly end in some kind of satanic ritual linked to the case two decades before? Is a serial killer at large?

In this haunting thriller, based on best-selling novels by Tana French, slick English detective Rob Reilly (Killian Scott) teams up with troubled Irish cop Cassie Maddox (Sarah Greene) to tackle the killing.

Killian said: “Rob is obsessive, talented and fixated with relentlessly pursuing the truth. The case he and Cassie investigate is very relevant to their back stories.

“We see the partners’ lives begin to self-destruct and unravel. They’re fractured and broken people. Boundaries are crossed personally and professionally.”

The first episode of the eight-parter sees gruff Supt O’Kelly – played by Game of Thrones’ Conleth Hill – eager to avoid a media circus. The investigation gathers pace when a woman is found stabbed to death in a roofless cottage nearby. As Cassie goes undercover, it rips the scabs off some painful psychological wounds.

Sarah, who had a recurring role in Penny Dreadful, said: “Cassie suffered a huge trauma. Both Cassie and Rob are running away from their pasts, but it inevitably catches up with them. They’re each other’s keeper of secrets. That might not be the healthiest of relationships.”

With shocking twists, gallows humour and supernatural themes, it’s a complex story as dark and tangled as the creepy

forest where it all began.
