Help me get some wonderful winter style all wrapped up

- with KIRSTY McKENZIE

I was given £100 for my birthday and would like to spend my money on buying something new for winter. I’m 21, a size 12 and I like to be ahead of the trends.

Ta-dah! Meet the most desirable item of the season – the coat. Well worth spending your cash on, the ideal jacket is structured and sexy and works for all shapes and sizes.

It’s versatile, think of it as a foundation piece to build your wardrobe around, and chimes perfectly with the best bits of the new season: the knee-high boots and the rich brown, greens and orange shades that will have you feeling more autumnal that a pumpkin spice latte.

This Topshop coat is my top pick. Whites aren’t just for spring, which is why clever clogs on the high street have given them a wintry twist. Team this sure-to-sell out Topshop trench with wide leg check trousers or wear beige head to toe if you are feeling daring. This is the high-fashion choice of the season, and will leave you with change from your £100.

Second, let’s hear it for the fringe coat. This Zara number is bang on budget and well ahead of the trend. This jacket is dramatic and cuts an elegant line, and those big tassels say, “Look at me.”

Finally, this humble tartan trimmed trench coat from Warehouse is super-forgiving. It’s not vintage, but it has that timeless-fashion thing going on. Wear it with stacked mules and a leather skirt to sex it up, tall boots and a smart bag for the office, or go grunge with a cosy knit, combatstyle flat boots and woolly tights.
