Rose on for another fairytale

-

JONNY STEWART presented his personal tribute to Ronaldinho in front of the TV cameras as Rose floated into the third round. The Bonnyrigg skipper sent a wicked 54th-minute cross looping over keeper Lee Herbert for a finish that echoed the Brazilian’s against David Seaman at the 2002 World Cup. Not to be outdone, George Hunter skinned two players 13 minutes later for a second on a memorable night in Midlothian in front of a bumper 1693 crowd. Rose boss Robbie Horn and his stars posed as The Untouchables in midweek, a nod to the most famous figure to pull on the shirt, Sean Connery. But there was nothing smash and grab as the fight between the Highland and Lowland League high-fliers came down to one moment of fortune and another of finesse. Asked about his finish, a piece of composure to match James Bond himself, Hunter said: “Aye it was all right, wasn’t too bad! It feels great. Buckie, credit to them, gave us a battle but it was good to get over the line. It was important to show what Bonnyrigg can do and we did that very well.”

An unmarked Ross Gray headed inches past the post after Stewart’s strike.

Gray had said there would be no celebratory champagne after Rose chairman Charlie Kirkwood treated them to an Asda carry-out of beers after their first-round triumph.

But Hunter got the manof-the-match bubbly after cutting in from the right, leaving Lewis MacKinnon chasing shadows and Kieran Adams tangled up before tucking home No.2.

MacKinnon then sent a six-yard shot sailing over as Rose were left dreaming of a run to match their trip to Tynecastle in 2017.
