Quinn: I hope there are no sombreros blocking path to hat
TONY QUINN is relieved his Queen’s Park side are not heading to Spartans’ old stomping ground after his last trip ended in a Mexican wave goodbye to the Cup.
The Spiders assistant boss was on the pitch in 2006 when the giantkillers sent them crashing out in the third round.
And with a reunion in today’s second round, Quinn is just glad to be typing Ainslie Park into the GPS.
He said: “It was the old City Park and the changing rooms were portacabins.
“The pitch was a mud heap with a huge slope and everywhere we looked they had fans dressed as Mexicans. Right around the ground there were supporters with sombreros on.
“They were right up for the game as were Spartans. We managed to get an early goal and thought that would settle things down but they bombarded us.”
Spartans went on to win 3-2 as Quinn said: “Thankfully this game is at Ainslie Park, which our players are familiar with. Spartans will be up for it and hopefully there will be no sombreros to be seen.”
Albion Rovers boss Kevin Harper is not interested in the romance of Highland League strugglers Fort William when the pair clash at Cliftonhill today.
He said: “All that matters to us is being in the draw for the next round.”
Elgin host former League Two side Berwick and boss Gavin Price said: “They still have plenty of experienced players so this will not be straightforward.”
Strathspey Thistle travel to Stirling Albion, whose manager Kevin Rutkiewicz has raided his contacts book.
He said: “A few of the boys I played with at Aberdeen are in the Highland League so I called them to make sure we have as much information as possible.”
