New mum’s brain tumour tragedy

FAMILIES FACE MEDICAL NIGHTMARES

-

A YOUNG mum was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour – just two days after giving birth to her first baby.

The growth was discovered after 21-year-old Megan Lavery became ill just hours after she delivered healthy baby boy, Roan.

Megan, from Ballieston, Glasgow, had been admitted to hospital a day earlier after a violent vomiting episode which doctors put down to her pregnancy.

But when she became seriously ill after the birth on August 13, doctors sent her for an MRI scan where they discovered the tumour.

Megan has since undergone four operations but doctors have now told her there is nothing more they can do.

She is enduring gruelling radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments five days a week at the Beatson cancer centre in Glasgow in an effort to stop the tumour growing.

Her family, including partner Paul Sweeney, mum Denise and brother Andrew are now helping to look after Megan and baby

Roan at their home. The family have launched a fundraising drive to help them support Paul and Megan.

Denise said: “Megan is being so strong it’s unbelievable. She’s never once complained or asked ‘Why me?’”

“We have been looking at alternative therapies for Megan and are funding a drug called Penoxal, a natural supplement that has had great results worldwide.

“Since she has been taking it the change in her has been amazing. It’s giving her energy and she’s able to do things with her son.

“This is the way forward for Megan but it doesn’t come cheaply. The average cost of her treatment, including supplements to help with her radiation therapies, is about £300/350 a month which we have been funding ourselves.

“This is why we’re organising this fund-raiser.”
