Call 999...our game needs intensive care
FOR all the acclaim they garnered in Scotland, Brendan Rodgers’ Invincibles were barely acknowledged south of the border.
“Of course they’re unbeaten, it’s Scottish football” was the gist, with “something something my nan” and “something something tinpot something something” thrown in for good measure. Angus Gunn denies Harvey Barnes but Ben Chilwell converts the rebound. Southampton 0-1 Leicester.
Sadly, those criticisms of Scottish football have been vindicated of late. As if the embarrassment of Rangers having to settle for a draw away from home against Porto and Celtic having to wait until the 90th minute for a winner against Lazio wasn’t enough, results over the weekend compounded the impression our game’s significantly less competitive than the English equivalent.
If nothing else it’s surely the only environment in which a Brendan Rodgers side could conceivably put six past an opponent, as his Celtic team did against Kilmarnock in September 2016. The ball is worked to Youri Tielemans in the area and he doubles Leicester’s advantage. Southampton 0-2 Leicester.
Killie fared somewhat better on Saturday against St Mirren at Rugby Park, with Kirk Broadfoot coming up against his former boss Angelo Alessio for the first time since contrasting the Italian’s style unfavourably with that of predecessor Steve Clarke.
Only a Mickey Mouse league like ours could serve up such one-sided fare
