JON HOPES TO STAYFOCUSED ON NEW DON

- BY SCOTT BURNS

JON GALLAGHER is confident he’ll see out the season at Aberdeen.

The midfielder is on loan from Atlanta United with the agreement set to run out in January.

But talks with the MLS champions are on-going and Dons boss Derek McInnes is confident a deal will be struck to keep Gallagher at Pittodrie until the end of May.

Gallagher said: “They just tell me to focus on my football which I have been doing so we will see what decision is made between the two of them.

“I’m not really thinking that far ahead because if I do I could get caught up and distracted.

“I’m just trying to do well in the present because that is really all I can control at the moment.”

The Irishman arrived in the summer, highly recommended by club legend Bobby Clark, his coach in the US at Notre Dame University.

Aberdeen vice-chairman Dave Cormack’s close links with Atlanta United also helped get the deal done.

And Gallagher, 23, said: “I’ve really enjoyed it at Aberdeen. It has been great both on and off the pitch as I’ve learned a lot about myself. I came over here with a pretty open mind and didn’t know what to expect. I knew the style of play would be a little different as I was brought up in the UK.

“I have that background so I am used to that British style of football which is fast-paced and physical. I felt I could adapt to it quickly and I think I have.”

Gallagher was an everpresent in Aberdeen’s Europa League assault and since then it has been a rollercoaster. The Dons made an indifferent start, crashed out of the Betfred Cup to Hearts and took a couple of heavy beatings from Rangers and Celtic.

McInnes apologised to the fans after their 4-0 home defeat by the Hoops. He demanded a reaction and got it with wins against Hamilton, Kilmarnock and Ross County to take them back into third place.

Gallagher added: “That bit of adversity always tests the team but we have strength in the squad and a good group of lads.

“It allows you to show we are better than what happened against Celtic, that we can bounce back, and we’ve done that.”
