Skipper call for fans to make Merk

-

SKIPPER Giorgos Merkis has pleaded with Cyprus fans to be more like the Tartan Army and roar their side to history.

The islanders are looking to finish third in a qualifying group for the first time by holding off the Scots in Nicosia today.

Steve Clarke’s side will have more than 3000 fans in the GSP Stadium – but the captain wants the home fans to turn up the heat.

APOEL ace Merkis said: “We are playing against a strong side and fighting for third gives us extra motivation. That would be a big step and we are ready to give our ultimate to get that.

“I have been told there are 3000 Scotland fans even though their team is below is in the group.

“This is an example for the Cypriot supporters. Even if you are low in the standings you need to back your team. We are ready mentally and physically for the Scotland match. This is a big day for us and we are ready.”

Boss Ran Ben Shimon admitted the clash is one of the biggest in the country’s history. He said: “This is a big game in the group and we are coming to an important junction for the team.

“We have our own target to make a step forward and take us to a place we have never been before. Nobody has ever put their footsteps on third place and that is what we are aiming for.

“My players are prepared for this challenge, we are positive and we want the people to support us.

“We need every fan we can get but I have confidence in my team. Personally, it would be an achievement but it’s not about me. It’s about the national team and taking that next step, pushing the ceiling.

“We shouldn’t look at the individual achievements, it’s what the team does.”

Scotland needed a late winner from Oliver Burke to sink Cyprus at Hampden but Shimon reckons Clarke’s side will be strong despite the raft of call-offs.

He said: “It’s not black and white. Important players are important but I never speak about that.

“If you are involved with sport you know it’s not about who plays – it’s about how they play. We are only focusing on ourselves – nothing else.”
