Durrant: Give him statue at stadium

IAN DURRANT believes Dave King’s legacy at Rangers should come with a bronze statue outside Ibrox if they lift silverware this season.

The Rangers legend was taken aback by the chairman’s announcement that he’ll be stepping down next year, after taking control in 2015 to play a major role in resurrecting the club from financial oblivion.

After digesting the news which stunned many at the club’s AGM yesterday, Durrant also is in no doubt the South Africa-based businessman’s exit could be triumphant if they stop Celtic from claiming nine-ina-row and lift the Betfred Cup next month by beating their city rivals.

He said: “We all know the significance of this year’s league. He has backed the manager and if the manager goes on and wins the league I think there will maybe be a statue of Dave King getting put up somewhere.

“There will be plans in place. He wouldn’t have done this without having that covered. You have Alistair Johnston, John Bennett, Douglas Park, businessmen who have put a lot of money in.

“They’ll have a plan about where to take Rangers now. Whoever comes in now will have a healthy club.

“The news was a surprise. King got Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff in and everything seemed to be going in the right direction.

“He has signed £7million players and has built a squad. He will now want to see Rangers win the Betfred Cup Final and lift a trophy.”

Durrant was speaking at the presentation of a £10,000 cheque to the Glasgow Children’s Hospital from funds raised at sporting events with 1st Star and Five Stars during 2019.
