Storey time for goal hero

It’s Miles better for hitman as he finds his form back at “home”

MILES STOREY reckons finding his home in the Highlands is allowing him to show how good a player he can be.

The Caley Thistle striker was described as “unplayable’ by his boss John Robertson after helping tear Ayr apart.

Following uninspiring spells at Aberdeen and Partick Thistle the English hitman is loving being back in Inverness, where he first blazed on to the Scottish scene on loan from Swindon.

Storey used his explosive pace to devastating effect at times against Ayr. For the killer second goal he went on a 40-yard run from deep leaving all behind him before squeezing a shot through keeper Ross Doohan’s grasp.

The attacker, deployed more as a wideman than striker under Robertson, said: “I’ve loved it being back here.

“By far this has been the most enjoyable club I have been at in my career so it was a no-brainer to come back when the chance arose.

“I’m just trying to help the team as much as I can. Being part of that front four, I think I need to get more goals.

“That’s my main focus – helping the team. As long as we’re winning I suppose it doesn’t really matter about me but that’s what I want to do.”

While Storey is back in the groove there also seem to be renewed momentum for Caley Thistle.

Having stalled and slipped seven points behind Dundee United, three consecutive wins in the league have reignited hopes of catching the Tannadice side.

Beating Ayr put five points between them and the visitors while Dunfermline, climbing into third, sit four behind.

Storey said: “It’s a good string of wins – and four clean sheets counting the cup game.

“I would always back us to score goals as we have them all over the pitch. So if we keep a clean sheet nine times out of 10 we will win games.

“We’ve got so much quality throughout the squad but we need to keep building this good run and create a bit of a gap on the teams below us.

“It’s enjoyable to be part of the team at the moment. We’re knocking it around and creating chances, with everyone working for each other.

“Everyone is shattered when they come off, which shows how much everyone is giving to the cause.

“We’ve a number of games coming up and have set a target for where we want to be going into New Year.

“We’ll try not to concentrate too much on other people, we can only control what we do.”

For Storey’s clincher both James Keatings and Jordan White were screaming for a pass in the penalty area.

Luckily, Storey netted himself. He said: “James and Jordan told me afterwards that if I hadn’t scored I’d have been in trouble.

“I got into the box and was looking to maybe square it across the box with the outside of my foot. But I thought if that didn’t come off I’d get into even more trouble!

“It opened up after that. I tried to go across the keeper but it trickled in.

“He pulled off a good save in the first half so I felt I deserved that little bit of luck. It’s good to be back on the scoresheet.

“I’m learning this position. “I can do the stuff where I go outside and cross it, using my pace. I’ve just got to be a bit more clever.”

Caley Thistle were always on top against Mark Kerr’s injury-depleted side with the breakthrough after 20 minutes well deserved.

From a fine David Carson ball to feet, White took a superb first touch on the edge of the area and cushioned a first-time finish into the lefthand corner of the net.

The home side struck again on the counter-attack after 63 minutes. Storey made his dash forward to the left side of Ayr’s box and somehow sent a shot squirming through Doohan’s grasp and over the line.
