LET’S GO AND CLEANUPNOW

-

TOMMY WRIGHT loves to hear rival bosses complain about scrappy games because it means his players are back on the ball.

The Perth side have tightened up to post clean sheets against Kilmarnock and Hearts in their last two games.

The Tynecastle victory was their first away win for nearly a year and lifted them out of the basement.

But the fall-out reminded Wright of the days when his Saints were flying high.

He said: “When we were finishing in the top six, after almost every game you heard from opposition managers how poor a game it had been.

“I used to have a little chuckle to myself because it meant we’d been dogged and well organised.

“So hearing people say the last two games have been poor is great for me.

“We have kept two clean sheets and that’s exactly what I asked of the players.

“On Saturday conditions were not ideal, the pitch was poor and the wind was really bad. But in the key moments we played the better football and had more quality up top – and ultimately that’s what won us the game.

“But getting back to being solid at the back has been our biggest aim lately and I’ve been delighted with the clean sheets.

“Everyone has done their jobs in the last two games, good basic defending. When we do that, with the pace we have up front, you will always create opportunities.

“With the games we have coming up, winning at Tynecastle gives us the platform to build on that.

“But it’s all about St Mirren now and nobody is looking beyond that.”
