One of a kind

Kind-hearted Ellie, 12, saves up all year for expensive headphones .. then donates cash to homeless

- BY KATHLEEN SPEIRS

ELLIE Devlin saved up her cash for a treat – then spent it on the homeless.

Instead of buying earphones, she made up “survival packs” for cold winter days and nights.

Her kindhearted act is an inspiration and a reminder that Christmas is about giving.

CHRISTMAS was made a little brighter for Glasgow’s homeless thanks to the kindness of a big-hearted schoolgirl.

Ellie Devlin, 12, saved her pocket money all year to buy a pair of Apple AirPods.

But after seeing more and more people sleeping rough, the youngster decided to instead use the cash to help those left fortunate.

Ellie, from Blantyre, Lanarkshire, spent her savings on warm clothing, food and toiletries and made up mini survival packs to hand out to the homeless in Glasgow city centre.

Her gran, Catherine Devine, 55, told the Record Ellie’s family couldn’t be more proud. She said: “Ellie has such a kind nature.

“She saw the amount of homeless people in the city and wanted to give back to the community. We’re so proud of her.”

On Saturday, Ellie headed to Argyle Street and handed over parcels filled with hats, scarves, gloves, socks, wipes, hankies, water, snacks and sweets – all bought with her own money.

Catherine said: “People were so grateful and told Ellie she was a wonderful girl. One woman even started crying.”

The gran added: “Ellie’s already been talking about how people aren’t just homeless over Christmas. She’s thinking about next year and what else she can do to help.” Earlier this week, we told how a Glasgow hair salon opened its doors to homeless people. Nineteen in Wilson Street gave scores of homeless men and women a stylish new look, warm clothing and food after a leaflet campaign. Salon owners now plan to run similar events four times a year.
