Married dad took his own life at police station

- BY JANE HAMILTON

AN OFF-DUTY cop took his own life at the police station where he worked. It’s not known why Detective Constable Gordon Gibson, 42, was at the Greenock office. Fellow officers were said to be devastated by the married dad’s death.

A TRAGIC detective took his own life at the police station where he worked.

Gordon Gibson was found at Greenock Police Station just before 5pm on Saturday.

Colleagues rushed to his aid but he couldn’t be saved.

The 42-year-old detective constable was off duty at the time of the incident and it’s unclear why he was at the station.

The married dad-of-two’s death is not being treated as suspicious and fellow officers were last night said to be devastated. A source said: “This is real tragedy for everyone concerned and obviously all of his colleagues are upset at what has happened.

“It’s an awful thing to happen. Gordon was popular and well known.

“The full support of the authorities is being offered to everyone related to the incident. Everyone is devastated.” Another source said that Gordon had recently gone through a troubled time.

Gordon’s family, from the Greenock area, were being comforted by specialist officers yesterday.

Yesterday, a representative from Greenock Police Club changed its Facebook profile picture to The Thin Blue Line – a tribute to an officer who has died.

Detective Superintendent Mark Bell, of Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Division, said: “We can sadly confirm that a serving officer died at Greenock Police Station on Saturday, December 21

“Inquiries remain ongoing but the 42-yearold’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

“Support is being provided to family and his colleagues at this incredibly difficult time and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
