Cove debut delight at Hampden

-

COVE remained top of League Two by securing a 3-1 win over Queen’s Park in what was the Balmoral club’s first appearance at Hampden.

Fittingly it was club skipper Mitch Megginson who grabbed Cove’s first goal at the home of Scottish football and the former Aberdeen striker repeated his feat in injury time to kill off a fightback from the Spiders.

The 27-year-old grabbed the opening goal on 25 minutes when he sidestepped Cameron Clark and then darted past Creag Little before slamming a shot past Willie Muir at his near post.

Megginson said: “It is nice to be the player that created that bit of history.

“When I broke into the box, everything opened up for me.”

Within 90 seconds of going ahead Cove grabbed their second with referee Craig Napier receiving praise for his role in Jamie Masson’s strike.

A shot from Fraser Fyvie was pushed out by Muir and Megginson looked set to turn the loose ball home until he was fouled by Little however Napier played an advantage that allowed Masson to slam in from six yards.

Queen’s ace Salim Kouider-Aissa guided a header past Stuart McKenzie in 50 minutes.

What looked like an easy win was becoming harder as Cove were pushed back.

However, in injury time Megginson netted another fine solo goal.

An injury-time drive from Allan Smith saw Edinburgh City clock up a 1-0 success at Stirling.

Herd and Stenhousemuir’s Connor McBride exchanged early goals at Central Park before the Blue Brazil came out on top in a 3-1 success.

Harvey Swann got the Fifers back in front before half-time with Jordan Allan adding the third.

Declan Byrne scored first and last as Albion Rovers raced into a fourgoal lead against Annan with the Coatbridge side eventually winning 4-2.

Daniel Scally and Ouzy See scored in-between Byrne’s efforts with Jamie Ballantyne and Christian Nade pulling goals back.

Elgin defeated Brechin 3-1 with Kane Hester and Shane Sutherland on target. Daniel MacKay added a third after Matthew Knox had netted for City.
