Painkillers row cancer mum dies

-

BY PETER DAVIDSON A YOUNG Scots mum who told how she was sent home with painkillers by her GP instead of being diagnosed with cancer has died.

Ashley Meehan passed away on December 23 surrounded by family and friends.

Her partner Peter Potts took to Facebook to announce the passing of his “soul mate”.

The 30-year-old former nursery teacher from Clydebank had been declared cancer-free in December 2018 but said medics failed to act quickly enough when her cervical cancer returned earlier this year.

Ashley sought help in April but told the Record she was sent home by her GP with painkillers including morphine.

She endured excruciating pain in her legs and bladder and twice went to the A&E unit at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she wasn’t given any scans.

However, she was told in May at the Beatson Cancer Charity Centre in Glasgow the cancer had returned.

Peter posted: “Not sure what to say but try my best... 19 months of fighting, ups and downs and even beating this horrible disease – Ashley’s final wish was to have one last Christmas morning with her babies and we were going to have Christmas one day early.

“She was my soulmate, the person I was meant to be with the rest of my life – life is so cruel, so unfair and she never gave up and was so brave and fought to the end for her babies.”

A spokesman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “We are very sorry to hear Ashley has passed away.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family at this difficult time.”
