Accies’ Martin plots fairytale after seeing his old club lift trophy
SCOTT MARTIN got a bittersweet taste for Scottish Cup glory when Hibs stunned Rangers at Hampden in 2016.
The midfielder was on loan at Forfar from the Hibees when Alan Stubbs’ side ended their 114-year wait to lift the trophy.
That meant he was among the fans in the national stadium as his team-mates laid their
Hampden hoodoo to rest in spectacular style.
Now at Hamilton, he is desperate for his chance to play a central part in a Cup fairytale.
Accies face Edinburgh City in the fourth round tomorrow and Martin, 22, admits the memory is still fresh in his mind.
He said: “It was great to watch lads you see every day going and doing something like that. Maybe I missed it a bit but I don’t think I was good enough at the time.
“I went to see a couple of the boys after the game. It gave me a taste for it.
“As much as I wasn’t involved what they did was amazing and they were still my team-mates.
“It was a big deal for the club and for Edinburgh. I was at the final, sitting in the stands and it was an amazing experience. But I wasn’t on the pitch at the end!”
Accies go into the second half of the season five points clear of Hearts at the bottom. Gaffer Brian Rice reckons a Cup run and league form go hand in hand and Martin agrees.
He added: “A Cup run would give the changing room and the fans a boost. I know Edinburgh City boss James McDonaugh who was Hibs’ Under-20s coach.
“He was class, really good with me. I don’t think I was his favourite player because I was a wee bit erratic!
“They are going to be a good side and are second in their league for a reason. We will never take them lightly.”
