Cup run May be spark to reignite my Perth return

-

ST JOHNSTONE v MORTON

STEVIE MAY hasn’t played in a Scottish Cup tie for St Johnstone since helping the Perth club lift the trophy for the first time at Celtic Park six years ago.

And the striker is hoping today’s clash with Morton can spark his second spell with the club to life at the start of a new decade.

The 27-year-old will go down in Saints history as one of the players who helped them beat Dundee United 2-0 in the 2014 final.

Now he wants to savour another run in the Cup.

May said: “I didn’t really think about it being my first cup tie for St Johnstone since we won it.

“We want to get on a run. There’s no better feeling for supporters and players than getting silverware.

“It’s very special and this is a special competition.

“The Scottish Cup is always a weekend you have in the diary. There are a lot of games coming up but the start of the Cup is always exciting. You want to be in the draw for the next round.

“You want to go as far as you can. You need to have a bit of luck on your side but we showed in the past what can happen. “

Morton avoided a shock in the last round as they beat Brora Rangers 3-1 in a replay after being held at Cappielow by the Highland League side.

That could be a turning point in the season and midfielder Kyle Jacobs insists they are heading to Perth full of confidence.

He said: “We’ve had good wins over Arbroath and Dunfermline in our last two games. We were a new team in the summer with only four or five boys staying.

“We have finally gelled and will look to keep that going. This cup tie will be a big test of how well things have actually clicked.”
