The earliest recorded reference to the sport is of a purchase of golf clubs made by King James VI from a bowmaker in Perth in the early 1500s.

The club’s infamously challenging fifth hole, Spion Kop, has broken the hearts of many a player and is known as one of the most difficult in the UK.
