Jones is only half sorry for Irish jibe

-

ENGLAND boss Eddie Jones has issued a grudging apology to Ireland after mocking them following his side’s win at Twickenham.

Jones stuck the boot into the Irish following his side’s 24-12 thumping of Andy Farrell’s men.

Sunday’s result ruined Ireland’s hopes of winning a Triple Crown and Grand Slam – and kept alive England’s chances of the Six Nations title.

England charged into a 17-0 half-time lead and cocky Jones insisted after-wards the clash was over before the break.

He said: “We put Ireland to the sword. They were going to do this and do that ... if it was a cricket match we would have declared at half-time.”

Jones was also accused of disrespecting Ireland in the build-up after picking several players out of position, while claiming flanker Ben Earl could play in the backs.

Now Jones has said sorry but admits he feels like he can’t comment on anything these days without being criticised.

The Aussie said: “It’s probably a throwaway line, mate. I probably need to apologise for it again. Sorry, sorry, sorry. I know you’re not allowed to say anything that’s a little bit different here so I’ll apologise. I’ll apologise for making a comment that’s not in the rugby sense. Apologies.

“But you’re not allowed to say these things in rugby because then you become a trash talker and an idiot and all those things. I don’t need to be involved in the judgment, I just need to coach. But I do find it amusing.”

Meanwhile, Manu Tuilagi admits he has become the “daddy” of the squad after deciding to be a mentor to some of Jones’ younger stars.

The 28-year-old centre said: “I just try and help the guys coming in.

“I was in that position once with England and sometimes you can get overwhelmed.

“I feel really old! The boys here are so young.”
