SCOTS TOURIST TRAPPED IN TENERIFE

SCOTS holidaymakers face being trapped at a Tenerife hotel for up to two weeks after a man tested positive for coronavirus.

It is believed about 1000 people are stuck in quarantine in the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in the Canary Islands after an Italian doctor who stayed at the hotel was found to have the deadly virus.

Spanish police have taped off the popular hotel with no guests allowed to enter or leave.

One Scots tourist told the Record guests were told to stay in their rooms via notes slipped under their doors.

The guest said: “A letter was put under our door saying we had to stay in our room.

“It didn’t say anything about coronavirus. We heard about that online.

“We were told not to leave our room but I went down to reception to ask what was going on.

“There are very few staff going about, everything is cordoned off.

“Everyone is a bit confused about what’s going on. We think we’re going to be here a long time.

“It feels a bit weird and surreal. Police are at the exits of the hotel so no one can get out.

“The police said it could be 10 to 14 days before we are allowed out.

“We are supposed to be flying back today but it looks like we won’t be getting that flight.”

The letter read: “Dear guests. We regret to inform you that for health reasons, the hotel has been closed down.

“Until the sanitary authorities warn,

you must remain in your room.” Another Scot, Aly Razek, from Perth, took to Twitter showing a video of police sealing off the hotel from the outside.

Clips show officers with masks at the entrance to the hotel as people mingle outside.

The Italian sufferer, who is from the Lombardy region where several people have died, is believed to have gone to a local health centre yesterday after feeling unwell.

He has now been quarantined at the Nuestra Senora de Candelaria University Hospital in Santa Cruz.

A statement from the hotel said: “Following the report of a possible coronavirus case detected in a customer from Italy, staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, H10 Hotels has implemented all health and operational recommendations from the health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of customers and employees.”

Canary Islands president Angel Victor Torres added: “The coronavirus protocol has been activated for an Italian tourist in the south of Tenerife.”

China reported 508 new cases and another 71 deaths on Tuesday, 68 of them in the central city of Wuhan, where the epidemic was first detected in December.

The updates bring China’s totals to 77,658 cases and 2663 deaths. Are you staying at the hotel? Get in touch by email at reporters@ dailyrecord.
