But when the duo found out that Brandon was transgender, they were furious and abducted him from a party on Christmas Eve before driving him to a secluded spot.
The pair then raped Brandon before taking him home and ordering him to shower.
The rape was reported to police and when the attackers became aware of the plans, they hatched a plot to silence Brandon forever.
On New Year’s Eve, Lotter and Nissen drove to a farmhouse where Brandon was staying and shot him.
They also killed two witnesses, Lisa Lambert and Phillip DeVine.
A child who was in the house at the time was spared before the duo fled the scene.
They were arrested and charged a short time later. Lotter was found guilty of three counts of first degree murder, three counts of using a weapon and one count of burglary following his jury trial in 1995.
His former drinking buddy Nissen gave evidence against him in a bid to avoid receiving a death sentence for his role in the horror crimes.
Lotter has launched several appeals against his conviction but all have failed – even after Nissen recanted his testimony and admitted killing the three victims.
Lotter currently occupies a death row cell at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, where Michele hopes to visit him.
