Taxing times

- BY ANDY PHILIP

SCOTS are drowning in council tax debt – and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Citizens’ Advice Scotland say they’ve spoken to people who owe a total of nearly £7million.

Clearly, the national figure will be higher.

And local authorities are pushing the price up again in the desperate attempt to fund public services.

The total is shocking enough – but it’s even worse when you learn some didn’t even have to pay in the first place.

As we report today, a Citizens’ Advice staff member accidentally found out her own dad had mistakenly paid thousands not realising he was exempt.

That’s why the support service is now running a two-week campaign to make sure people know what they’re entitled to.

After years of austerity, it really could make the difference in balancing the household finances.

SCOTS seeking help with council tax debts owed nearly £7million to local authorities last year.

Citizens Advice Scotland said the figure only represents those coming for help, suggesting the number of people in the red will be far higher.

And in a new campaign today, the support group says it hopes to help more people from missing out on exemptions and reductions.

Myles Fitt of Citizens’ Advice said: “Across the country, most councils are set to increase council tax rates.

“We know that over 80,000 fewer people are claiming council tax reduction than when the system was introduced seven years ago.

“Those eligible for exemptions, reductions or discounts include people on low incomes, students and people with disabilities.”
