Sadness after superfan dies at junior game

BY STUART HODGE

A FOOTBALL superfan collapsed and died outside his beloved Neilston Juniors’ ground.

Gordon Sheach had been watching the Renfrewshire side take on Pollok on Saturday at the Brig O’Lea Stadium.

Physios from the clubs, Chloe Aitken and Euan Duffy, as well as a member of the public and an offduty police officer, rushed to his aid but they were unable to save him.

Gordon was seen regularly at the junior club’s games and was also a keen bowler.

Neilston Juniors spokesman Mark Kirkland said: “It’s been an absolutely devastating weekend.

“Gordon was well-known around the club and in the local community. He stayed about 500 yards away from the ground and came to a lot of home games.”

Military insiders said course progress was slowed down by Tory-led defence cuts from 2010 to 2015, when the Government allowed more pilots to be trained.

RAF officials claim the longest any pilot took to complete the course was “just over two-and-a-half years”.

While shorter than the video claims, it is still at least a year over the 18 months it used to take before Tory cuts made the course longer.

One retired RAF pilot said: “These guys should be applauded for drawing attention to the fact that such worldclass training has been badly hit by years of appalling cuts.”

An MoD spokesman said: “This video exhibits behaviour that does not reflect the high standards that we expect.”
