Brora in a league of their own

-

BUCKIE THISTLE midfielder Andy MacAskill reckons Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Inverurie Locos summed up why Brora Rangers’ name will be on the league trophy.

The Jags’ creative force gave everything he had in an effort to break down the second-top team and stake a claim for the runners-up spot.

Those chances remain alive but any hope of the title’s gone.

MacAskill said: “That’s maybe the difference between us and Brora. They’ve had tight games but managed to get the results in their favour.

“We should be happy with the performance, playing against a team second in league, but I’m disappointed.

“We’ve dominated but it’s galling we haven’t got the winner. We really need to win games like these where we’ve dominated if we’re to make up ground on teams above us.”

In the only match to survive the weather neither side failed to fully capitalise on a virtual fixtures wipe-out.

It was the green and white hosts who were in charge but in difficult conditions neither side found a killer touch to ignite the cold afternoon.

Buckie certainly had by far the best of the chances but Locos did well to hold out.

The Jags flew out of the traps looking with Marcus Goodall’s run down the right ending with a cross that Sam Urquhart only just sent wide.

Kyle Macleod then supplied Kevin Fraser who sprung the offside trap but Locos keeper Andy Reid came out to block confidently.

Midway through the first half Andy Macaskill, 20 yards out, got the ball on to his left foot and Reid had to show his mettle to turn his piledriver over the bar.

The home supporters twice thought they had scored in the closing minutes, with subs Scott Adams and Callum Murray both seeing their efforts hit the side-netting.

Locos boss Andy Low said: “We were poor. Buckie were the better side and bossed the game start to finish.

“We scraped a draw, it’s a positive the clean sheet but there is a lot of work to do.”
