Poults tees up a beauty to Azinger’s Euro barb
UPDATE IAN POULTER put Paul Azinger in his place after the American belittled the European Tour, declaring: “We have slapped your a*** in the Ryder Cup for so long.”
Twelve-time PGA Tour winner Azinger suggested Tommy Fleetwood was under pressure to prove himself with a first US title.
The Englishman finished third at the Honda Classic in Florida on Sunday.
Azinger said: “These guys know you can win all you like on that European Tour, the international game and all that – but you have to win on the PGA Tour.”
Poulter, a three-time PGA Tour winner, tweeted: “I like @PaulAzinger a lot. And get on with him great.
“But Paul please do not condescend or disrespect the @EuropeanTour and our players like that.
“We have slapped your a*** in Ryder Cup for so long. I know you captained a win but seriously that was embarrassing.”
Lee Westwood said: “One minute Paul walks down the range wishing you good luck before you play, the next he’s condescending to the Tour you play on and disrespects the tournaments you’ve won around the world. I’ve won in 19 different countries over four decades. That is disrespecting a lot of people.” DIVING: Grace Reid says she can’t focus on whether the coronavirus outbreak will knock Chinese rivals out of Olympic contention.
Amid fears the Chinese party will have to sit out this month’s World Series leg in London, the Scot said: “My approach definitely is control what I can control.”
