Character building Grief as 3 Motherwell fans take their own lives in a week
WORLD Book Day is fast becoming one of the most fun events on the calendar for kids, with youngsters heading to school dressed as their favourite literary characters. Parents yesterday pulled out all the stops to help kids create some amazing costumes for this year’s event, which had the theme of “Share a Million Stories”. Here are a selection of photos of adorable children in tremendous outfits.
TRIBUTES have been paid to three Motherwell fans who have taken their own lives in the past week.
Club officials and fans took part in a “thunder clap” during their game with Ross County on Wednesday to honour 24-year-old Mark Paton, who died last week.
But it was revealed yesterday by Well Society board member Derek Watson that two other fans have also died in the past week
He tweeted: “It was smiles all
BY JANE HAMILTON round when the final whistle went at Fir Park but, on a more serious note, in the last week or so, there has been another three @MotherwellFC supporters who have taken their own life.
“Again, as a community, more needs to be done and will be done. Please speak out.”
Chief executive Alan Burrows added: “Another three fans tragically gone too soon. The club will work with the Comm Trust, fans, experts, charities to refocus our message.
“We need to do more to tackle some of the issues that cause people to take their own lives. Far from easy, but we’re committed to playing our part.”
It’s not yet clear how old the other two men were or when they died but it is understood to have been within the past few days.
Mark’s cousin Kym Wilson took to social media to ask fans to take part in the 24th-minute applause. She said: “Mark was claret and amber through and through and it would mean a lot to his family if this were to happen.”
Last year, Burrows said he estimated 12 to 24 fans had taken their lives in the past two years.
