But a spokesman for the German club last night claimed they still hope to play the match under normal conditions, although the situation could change quickly.

They said: “We count on that game being played regularly but that is under today’s status quo.

“Prediction­s are difficult. As soon as we get more informatio­n we’ll inform fans.”

Spahn called for any event scheduled to have more than 1000 spectators to be postponed or played behind closed doors.

And the health minister for North-Rhine Westphalia, Karl-Josef Laumann, said: “If it has been said we no longer want to allow events with more than 1000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, it’s a recommenda­tion from the state minister to the lower authoritie­s. In truth it’s more like an order.”

The head of the World Medical Associatio­n, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, said: “You can’t have football games played with 35,000 spectators as if nothing had happened.”
