Daniel clan godmother jailed for a year over store-raiding day trip

-

GANGLAND godmother Annette Daniel has been jailed for a year for her part in an organised shoplifting crime ring.

The mother of Glasgow gang boss Steven “Bonzo” Daniel was caught fleeing Aberdeenshire with a haul of designer gear after a “shoplifting expedition” in April last year.

The 58-year-old was sentenced at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday after earlier admitting stealing £9000 worth of goods.

Daniel, who is the sister of late Glaswegian crime boss Jamie Daniel, appeared in the dock from custody after previously pleading to be locked up in expectation of jail time.

The court heard she went on a shoplifting

BY CHARLES GALL c.gall@dailyrecord.co.uk spree with accomplices Roberta Burke, 57, and James Shearer, 45, both from Glasgow, and Shirley Morrissey, 48, from Larkhall, Lanarkshire.

The gang took a day trip to Aberdeen in a hire car and were clocked by security guards visiting shops including Zara, Marks & Spencer and All Saints.

Staff called in police after spotting bare shelves and officers pulled the group over on the A90 near Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, as they tried to flee south.

The court was told officers recovered a large amount of goods, including gift cards, shoes, homeware and clothing.

Daniel pled guilty to the raid and admitted it was connected to serious organised crime.

Her solicitor David Kinloch said his client’s early guilty plea had spared the court time.

But Sheriff Graeme Napier suggested her guilt wouldn’t have been difficult to prove as she was caught in possession of stolen goods.

He said: “It was a shoplifting expedition to Aberdeen. There’s no point in beating about the bush.”

Burke and Shearer, who also admitted their roles in the crime spree, were each jailed for 16 months.

Morrissey, who drove the car, was given two years’ social work supervision and a six-month restriction of liberty order.
